In 1967, the Car of the Year judges voted overwhelmingly in favour of the new four-door Fiat 124 saloon. In fact, it garnered more than twice as many points as its nearest rival, the similarly shaped BMW 1600. What's most amazing about this car is that it has been used as a basis for so many other cars around the world, including a Lada version in Russia that is still in production in one form or other.
Obviously the judges didn't know how far reaching Fiat's new car would be. Instead, they voted on the car's considerable strengths, which included a spacious interior and huge boot (given the size of the car) and its sophisticated mechanicals, which included disc brakes and independent rear suspension. In time, the 124 spawned sought after Sport Spider and Coupé versions.
